Campbell hangs on to beat Liberty for first time in 6 games, 53-46

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina — Reco McCarter scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Campbell beat Liberty 53-46 on Wednesday in a Big South opener.

The victory broke a five-game losing streak against the Flames (6-8, 0-1) as the Camels (7-7, 1-0) notched their sixth victory in their last eight games.

The Camels led by one at halftime but lost that lead before building an 11-point advantage. The Flames rallied and closed to within three points, 48-45, after an 8-1 run capped by Andrew Smith's tip-in with 1:24 left. However, the Camels made 5 of 6 free throws from there and the Flames didn't get another field goal.

Liberty was led by Joe Retic with 12 points and Peter Moller with 10. Andrew Smith collected 12 rebounds.

Campbell shot just 28.6 percent and Liberty 30.4 but the Camels made eight more free throws, including 13 of its final 16 attempts, and five more 3-pointers.
