Police: Miami mounted patrol officer fatally shoots dog that attacked horse

MIAMI — A Miami mounted patrol officer fatally shot a dog that was attacking his police horse.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon in Little Havana.

Police say the officer was in his assigned area at Domino Park when he saw a stray dog charge at his horse, Sara. The officer tried to move the horse out of harm's way but the dog bit the horse.

The officer fired his weapon, fatally striking the dog.

The horse suffered deep wounds to the front and hind legs and was taken to the Miami Police Stables for treatment.

The dog was removed by Miami-Dade Animal Services.

The officer wasn't injured.

An investigation is continuing.
