Indiana U. physicists receive $1.2 million to build particle detector for subatomic searches

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — A team of Indiana University physicists has been awarded $1.2 million to build a machine to peer at particles smaller than atoms.

The Belle II detector will be located in Japan at the new SuperKEKB particle accelerator. Anselm Vossen, a research scientist in IU Bloomington's Department of Physics, and electronics engineers Brandon Kunkler and Gerard Visser will lead in the development of electronics for the detector.

Vossen says Belle II is expected to make measurements more precise than those reached by any prior experiment and it could be sensitive to certain particles that cannot be observed elsewhere.

Much of the new detector's work will focus on particles called hadrons and quarks, some of the building blocks of which atoms are made.
