Roswell man struck and killed after stopping car on I-10 near Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — New Mexico State Police say a man has died after he was struck while standing next to his car on an interstate west of Las Cruces.

State Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Armijo says the accident happened Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. on Interstate 10.

According to investigators, 55-year-old Kevin Jon Monfordini, of Roswell, stopped his Chevrolet Corvette in the right eastbound lane.

Witnesses say Monfordini then stood behind the vehicle and waived at oncoming traffic.

He was struck by a Honda utility truck and the impact pushed the Corvette off the roadway.

Armijo says Monfordini suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

There were no other injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
