Man dies after being carried from burning home in central New York

CANAJOHARIE, New York — The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says a man has died after rescuers carried him from a burning home in the Mohawk Valley.

The sheriff's office says Deputy Luke Paine and Ed Hernandez, an officer with the Canajoharie (kan-uh-joh-HAYR'-ee) Police Department entered the burning house shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday.

They found Robert Shear unconscious in a room adjacent to where the fire started. With help from two firefighters, Shear was carried outside. Hernandez provided first aid until emergency medical technicians arrived.

Shear was transported to Little Falls Hospital where he died.

Paine, Hernandez and members of the fire department were treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage to the house was reportedly minimal.
