March, vigil for man fatally shot by Lakewood, Wash., police

LAKEWOOD, Washington — Relatives and community members gathered Thursday night for a march and vigil for a man fatally shot in a lumber yard by police in the Tacoma suburb of Lakewood.

KING-TV of Seattle reports ( ) that marchers left flowers and a photo of 37-year-old Daniel Covarrubias in front of the Lakewood Police Department headquarters.

Police spokesman Lt. Chris Lawler has said police encountered the man Tuesday afternoon as they investigated reports of a suspicious person at the Pinnacle Lumber and Plywood yard. Multiple 911 callers had reported seeing a man running before climbing a fence into the lumber yard.

Two officers found the man atop a stack of lumber. Lawler says they reported that the man was reaching into his pocket. That's when they opened fire, fatally wounding him. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police have not said whether Covarrubias was armed.
