Share/Save/Bookmark

DETROIT — A 17-year-old prep football star has started his jail sentence in the body-slamming of a security officer at his Detroit high school.

Jayru Campbell's lawyer Jeff Edison tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1mYbZ9h ) his client turned himself in Monday. Campbell was sentenced in May to 60 days in jail. His jail sentence was to start after he finished summer school.

Campbell earlier pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault. His record could be expunged if he meets certain terms, such as attending anger management classes and getting counseling.

Campbell admitted he slammed the officer head-first Jan. 22 after refusing to pull a hood off his head at Cass Technical High School. The confrontation was recorded on video.

Campbell led Cass Tech to state championships in 2011 and 2012.
