HOUMA, Louisiana — Terrebonne voters will decide Dec. 6 whether to approve a half-cent sales tax that would raise an estimated $12 million a year to increase parish school workers' salaries.

The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1xrjwq5 ) teachers would receive a $4,000-a-year pay raise. Support workers, such as bus drivers and cafeteria workers, would receive a $2,000 annual raise.

Superintendent Philip Martin said he has been spreading the word about the tax since the board agreed in August to send it to voters and will intensify those efforts as the election nears.

Shoppers in Terrebonne now pay a sales tax of 9 cents on the dollar.
