TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — George LeMieux is making an issue of a government-paid mailing that went outside Senate primary opponent Connie Mack IV's congressional district.
The mail piece was distributed to 57,000 people outside Mack's district. LeMieux claimed Thursday that it was an intentional effort to reach voters at taxpayer expense.
Mack's campaign has said the company hired to distribute the item made a mistake. House members can use federal money to mail informational items to their constituents. A House commission approved the content of Mack's mailer.
The company that sent the item took the blame for the mistake and reimbursed the federal government nearly $18,000.
Republican Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois, who chairs the commission that oversees House member mailings, said the matter was an "unfortunate mistake" and Mack complied with the law.
