Long Island driver arrested on DWI charge after SUV crashes and overturns, killing passenger

PATCHOGUE, New York — A Long Island man has been arrested on a drunken-driving charge after his SUV crashed and overturned, killing his passenger.

The accident happened just after midnight Wednesday in Patchogue.

Suffolk County police say 24-year-old Joseph Keleher of Ronkonkoma was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he lost control and hit a curb.

The vehicle overturned and went up a grass embankment. Twenty-five-year-old passenger Kevin Smith was ejected.

Smith, of Oakdale, was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

Keleher was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was awaiting arraignment Thursday.

It wasn't clear if he had a lawyer.
