PHILADELPHIA — A northwest Philadelphia man convicted in the strangulation death of his pregnant girlfriend almost two years ago has been sentenced to 35 to 70 years in prison.

The Philadelphia Daily News (http://bit.ly/VEDfnP ) reports that 30-year-old Roysce Haynes apologized Tuesday to family members for what he called "this tragic incident that has occurred."

Common Pleas Judge Barbara McDermott called Haynes "selfish" and told him he was responsible for the September 2012 death of 24-year-old Atiya Perry.

Haynes was convicted of 3rd-degree murder in April. He said after sentencing that he wanted to appeal.

Court documents indicate Haynes was sentenced to 20 to 40 years on the murder conviction and a consecutive 15 to 30 years on a conviction of criminal homicide of an unborn child.
