New commander named for NY's Fort Drum; 30-year Army veteran to lead 10th Mountain Division

FORT DRUM, New York — The U.S. Army says a general serving with the deputy chief of staff at the Pentagon has been named the new commander of Fort Drum in northern New York.

The Pentagon announced Wednesday that Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Bannister will be the next commanding general of the post and the 10th Mountain Division. He succeeds Maj. Gen. Stephen Townsend, who has led the division for the past two years.

Bannister currently serves as the director of strategy, plans and policy in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Pentagon. He was deputy commanding general for operations at Fort Drum from 2009 to October 2011.

Fort Drum officials say information on when Bannister will take command isn't available.

The 30-year veteran has led troops in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
