TUCSON, Arizona — Tucson police say a man has died after exchanging gunfire with officers near the site of a homicide investigation.

Police spokesman Pete Dugan says the suspect, whose name is being withheld, died Sunday from his injuries.

According to police, officers were called Saturday about suspicious activity in an area where police had been investigating a homicide a day earlier. A call to 911 reported a man and woman looking around the area.

Dugan says when officers made contact with them, the man ran.

Police pursued him on foot and then gunfire occurred between two officers and the suspect.

The suspect was wounded and taken to the hospital.

Dugan says officers Brendon Brumitt and Matthew Gustafson were not injured.

As is standard practice, police are conducting a criminal and internal investigation.
