Arrest made in church fire in Dummerston; caused $25K in damage

DUMMERSTON, Vermont — Vermont State Police have made an arrest in a church fire in Dummerston.

Police say 19-year-old Dakota Thomas is facing a charge of second-degree arson.

Firefighters say the fire on Monday caused about $25,000 in damage to the Congregational Church.

Firefighters saw smoke coming out of the second floor and requested help from surrounding communities.

Officials say a passer-by used a fire extinguisher in the church to help put out the flames. There was no one in the building at the time and no injuries.

Thomas is expected to be arraigned on Oct. 14. It was not immediately known if he is being represented by a lawyer.
