Southbound I-17 reopens after closure at Camp Verde; man on freeway killed when hit by vehicle

CAMP VERDE, Arizona — Interstate 17's southbound lanes are open again after being closed at Camp Verde for about three hours because of a fatal accident involving a car and a pedestrian.

The state Department of Public Safety says the accident occurred just after 5 a.m. Friday when a vehicle struck a 54-year-old man who walked from the median into the path of the vehicle.

The DPS says the driver was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. Investigators are trying to determine why he on the freeway.
