BOSTON — A woman of Haitian descent has won the Democratic primary for a Massachusetts state Senate seat long held by Irish-American men.
State Rep. Linda Dorcena Forry earned 378 votes more than fellow Rep. Nick Collins according to unofficial results in Tuesday's election for the First Suffolk seat. A third candidate, South Boston business owner Maureen Dahill, finished a distant third.
The Boston Globe (http://bo.st/17xuA72 ) reports that Collins won't ask for a recount and will concede the election.
Forry is vying to replace former Sen. Jack Hart in the heavily Democratic district. Hart resigned to take a private sector job. She'll face Dorchester Republican Joseph Ureneck in the June 25 general election.
Forry credited her victory to campaign workers reaching out to everyone in the district.
