SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — Authorities say a Spartanburg police officer has been charged with driving under the influence after an on-duty crash.

Troopers told local media outlets that 36-year-old Derrick Canada lost control of his patrol car and hit a tree Friday morning.

Investigators say Canada's license was suspended after he refused to take a Breathalyzer test.

Spartanburg Police say Canada had been with the agency for 11 years. He is on administrative leave as the state Highway Patrol investigates the crash.

It wasn't known if Canada has a lawyer.
