SYRACUSE, New York — Police are investigating a homicide on Syracuse's west side.

The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Eli Morales. Police say he was fighting with several people on the first floor of a home around 3:40 a.m. Thursday. Morales was rushed to Upstate University Hospital after police arrived. He died shortly after 4 a.m.

Police Lt. Geno Turo says Morales suffered several injuries, but cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The central New York city has had a violent summer. Two men were shot and killed and nine others were wounded by gunfire over Fourth of July weekend, and last week police made two arrests in connection with the shooting death of a 21-year-old man in mid-June.

There have been 13 homicides this year in the city.
