Competency exam ordered for Michigan man in slaying of girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter

MIDLAND, Michigan — A Michigan man faces examinations to determine if he is criminally responsible and competent to stand trial on murder and first-degree child abuse charges in the death of his girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter.

The Midland Daily News reports ( ) Tuesday that County District Judge Michael Carpenter signed the orders last month for Richard Watson of Mio.

Authorities have said rescue workers responded Aug. 9 to the Ikea store in Wayne County's Canton Township, a Detroit suburb, after Evelyn Patricia Legacy became unresponsive. She had a brain injury and fractures. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died.

The baby was with her mother and Watson. Investigators believe she was injured at a Midland home.

Watson was not the baby's father.
