CLINTON, Massachusetts — A second inmate is headed to court to face a murder charge in connection with the death of another prisoner.

The Worcester district attorney's office says Michael Freeman is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Clinton District Court in connection with the death last Tuesday of 72-year-old William Sires.

Sires, serving a life sentence for killing his mother in 1973, was found beaten in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Facility in Shirley. He died en route to a hospital.

Authorities say Sires was beaten so severely he was barely recognizable. The beating followed an argument between Sires and several other inmates.

Another inmate pleaded not guilty last week.

It was not clear if Freeman had a lawyer.
