Tampa Bay area police officer fatally shoots man stabbing woman inside burning home

PLANT CITY, Florida — Authorities say a Tampa Bay area police officer fatally shot a man who was stabbing a woman inside a burning home.

Plant City police say officers responded to the home early Thursday morning after receiving a report of a fire. Officers initially helped two sisters — ages 13 and 18 — out of the home, but the girls told police their mother was being attacked in a locked bedroom.

Police say Officer James Burchett went to the back of the house and looked in a window, where he saw the man stabbing the woman. Burchett reportedly broke the window and then fired a single shot, killing the man.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Authorities weren't immediately naming the man or the woman. Officials say the two know each other, but their exact relationship wasn't clear.
