SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Opera is headed for the scrap heap after filing for liquidation bankruptcy this week.
The 16-year-old company filed its 314-page bankruptcy petition in federal court in San Antonio on Tuesday. The San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/IK9QuS ) reports the opera listed assets of $1,500 in office equipment and furniture and debts of almost $894,000. Most of the creditors are season-ticket holders, but the petition shows $50,500 is owed to tenor Placido Domingo.
The opera ended its season early and canceled its last two performances.
Meanwhile, another opera company is forming in San Antonio. Opera theater San Antonio has scheduled its debut for May 23, 2013.
