MONTREAL — Italian striker Marco Di Vaio scored a hat trick in the opening 32 minutes to lead the Montreal Impact to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Andrew Wenger and rookie Blake Smith each added their first goals of the season for the Impact, who remain unbeaten at home (5-0-1) and are now just one point behind New York on the Eastern Conference table.
The 36-year-old Di Vaio put the Impact ahead with a quick shot in the second minute. He scored again in the 28th and 32nd minutes and nearly connected on a fourth goal in the 38th but put a left-footed shot just over the crossbar.
The Italian now has nine goals on the season, level with the Union's Jack McInerney for the league lead. McInerney scored in the fifth minute for Philadelphia.
