Baton Rouge mother booked in trauma death of her 2-year-old daughter

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The death of a 2-year-old Baton Rouge girl has been ruled a homicide by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office.

Da'Laijah Smith died Monday of "severe blunt-force injuries" to her head, neck, chest and stomach. A statement issued Wednesday by Coroner William Clark said she also suffered abrasions and contusions on her arms and legs as well as rib fractures.

Police say the child's mother, 21-year-old Candice Smith told investigators she had shoved the child against a shower wall at their home. Candice Smith was arrested and booked on a count of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. After the coroner's report was issued, she was booked on first-degree murder.
