Sentencing set for Muldrow man charged in July 2011 shooting deaths of parents

POTEAU, Oklahoma — A formal sentencing is scheduled for a Muldrow man who pleaded no contest last month to first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his parents.

Kevin Paul Statham was set to go to trial this month for the July 2011 deaths of 69-year-old Helen Ruth Statham and 70-year-old Paul Everette Statham.

Prosecutors alleged that Statham shot his parents, then stole his mother's purse and father's wallet and drove to North Dakota. He was arrested a few days after the fatal shootings and extradited to Oklahoma.

Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty. Court records say the plea deal calls for two consecutive life sentences, but a judge must sign off on that.

Statham is set for sentencing at 11 a.m. Thursday.
