WESTMINSTER, Maryland — A New York man has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for fatally stabbing a co-worker during a fight in the supermarket where they were part of the cleaning crew.
Twenty-seven-year-old Zamani Lawson of Jamaica, New York, had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the June death of 22-year-old Bergari Zardiashuili, of Brooklyn, New York The two had worked at Martin's supermarket in Eldersburg and had shared a room in the basement of their supervisor's home.
The Carroll County Times reports (http://bit.ly/10xYokT) that Lawson apologized to Zardiashuili's family in court on Tuesday.
Lawson's defense attorney said Zardiashuili was the aggressor in the fight and had put Lawson in a martial arts hold.
Lawson had no previous criminal record.
