EASTON, Pennsylvania — A woman and her former boyfriend have been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the death of her grandmother following a home invasion in the victim's eastern Pennsylvania home.
A judge Northampton County imposed the sentences Thursday on Rebecca Johnson and Rogel Suero. They were convicted by a jury of second-degree murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and other charges.
Prosecutors said Johnson planned to steal $35,000 and jewelry from the home of 76-year-old Carrie Smith in January 2012 to buy a large amount of marijuana in Colorado. They said Suero and an accomplice carried out the crime.
Smith was hospitalized with chest pain hours after the crime and died of a heart attack two months later. A coroner and two forensic pathologists linked the robbery to her death.
