New York City police officer pleads not guilty to stomping suspect

NEW YORK — A New York City police officer has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault and other charges in a brutality case.

Officer Joel Edouard entered the plea on Tuesday in Brooklyn. He was released without bail.

Prosecutors say the 39-year-old Edouard stomped the head of a suspect last year while the man was face down and being handcuffed by other officers.

The encounter occurred about a week after the police custody death of Eric Garner. Both arrests were captured on cellphone videos.
