Rain forecast forces several Maine cities and towns to postpone July 4th festivities

PORTLAND, Maine — Several Maine cities and towns have rescheduled fireworks and other Independence Day celebrations due to looming bad weather.

Portland officials said that the city's fireworks show set for Friday will be moved to Saturday at 9:20 p.m. The Portland Symphony Orchestra's "Patriotic Pops" show will take place Saturday at 7:40 p.m.

"For the safety of people attending the symphony and everything else, we decided to postpone," said Jon Jennings, board member with July 4th Portland, which organizes the city's event.

Weather reports forecast a 70 percent likelihood of showers and thunderstorms Friday night. Saturday's forecast is clear.

The threat of bad weather also forced Augusta and Lewiston to postpone their Fourth of July festivities. Augusta put off its fireworks show until Aug. 2, but the city will still host the Old Fort Western Independence Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a parade at 4 p.m. The Lewiston/Auburn Liberty Festival, originally scheduled for Friday, has been pushed back to Sunday.

Camden, Jackman and Searsport are among other municipalities that have cancelled or delayed their firework shows, WABI-TV reported.
