NEW YORK — Sweet Reason won her season debut in a surprisingly close finish Friday at Aqueduct.
The filly trained by Leah Gyarmati was a division leader last season with two wins in four starts, including the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. This was her first effort since rallying from ninth to finish fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in early November as the 5-2 favorite.
The comeback was a modest spot, a mile $69,000 allowance race for 3-year-old fillies. Sweet Reason, the overwhelming 1-10 favorite against four rivals, needed a strong late kick to ease by the determined Aqua Regia by a half-length.
Irad Ortiz Jr. was aboard as Sweet Reason paid $2.30, $2.10 and $2.10.
The time was 1:40.11 on the fast track.
Aqua Regia returned $3.90 and $2.40, and Wraith paid $4.20 to show.
