Sporting Lisbon routs Guimaraes 4-1 to stay 3rd in Portuguese league


LISBON, Portugal — Sporting Lisbon won 4-1 at home against Guimaraes on Sunday to strengthen its hold of third place in the Portuguese league.

Joao Mario headed in Andre Carrillo's cross to open for Sporting in the 14th minute.

Adrien Silva converted a penalty to double the lead in the 33rd.

Islam Slimani headed home a third goal in the 45th, before Nani netted another spot kick in the 75th.

Sporting went down to 10 men when Paulo Oliveira was sent off with two bookings in the 81st, and Kanu scored Guimaraes' consolation goal a minute later.

Sporting pulled to within six points of second-place Porto.

Also, it was: Arouca 3, Gil Vicente 1; Moreirense 1, Maritimo 1; and Boavista 1, Belenenses 0.
