CHICAGO — In a story May 20 about a decision by the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Jackie Wilson is serving a life prison term in the deaths of two police officers in 1982. He is serving time for killing just one of them, Officer Richard O'Brien.

Illinois commission finds disgraced Chicago police commander tortured convicted cop killer

CHICAGO — The Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission has decided it has credible evidence that discredited former Chicago Police Lt. Jon Burge and detectives under his command tortured a suspect into confessing to the 1982 slayings of two police officers.

The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1PXKyvm) the commission decided Wednesday that Jackie Wilson was tortured into confessing to the shootings. The commission voted 5-2 to send the case to a Cook County judge for review.

The commission came to the same conclusion in May 2013, but decided to review their findings after complaints that its initial vote occurred without properly notifying families of murder victims about the proceedings.

Wilson is serving life in prison for the slaying of Officer Richard O'Brien. His partner, Officer William Fahey, also was killed in the incident. The officers pulled Wilson and his brother, Andrew, over on a routine traffic stop.

Andrew Wilson, who was also convicted in the slayings, died in prison in 2007.
