Off-duty Lawrenceville police officer drowns in Lake Lanier northeast of Atlanta

CUMMING, Georgia — Authorities say an off-duty Lawrenceville police officers has drowned in Lake Lanier.

A spokesman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said divers recovered the man's body around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office identified the officer as 32-year-old Cannon Trent Callender of Lawrenceville.

Lawrenceville police Capt. Greg Vaughn said Callender had been a Lawrenceville police officer for about four years.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1wEDIDa) that his body was found about 35 feet from shore. Authorities said he had slipped under the water near Little Ridge Park in the Cumming area.
