SAN FRANCISCO — Police say officers shot and killed a man who was chasing another man with a long-blade knife.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Monica MacDonald says police received a call at 9:45 p.m. Thursday about the armed man at 24th and Folsom streets. Before police arrived, two plainclothes officers saw the chase and drew theirs guns.

MacDonald says the officers had their department issued stars visible on their clothes, identifying them as police.

MacDonald says according to several witnesses the officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife.

He refused and the officers fired between four and six times. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released.

Police later learned the armed man had been trying to steal the other man's bicycle.

The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
