Arizona unemployment rises to 7.1 percent as state records an increase for 3rd straight month

PHOENIX — Arizona's unemployment rate is up for a third straight month.

Department of Administration economists reported Thursday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August was 7.1 percent, up from 7 percent in July.

The department says the state's economy added 39,500 nonfarm jobs in August, primarily due to seasonal increases in government and local education.

Seven economic sectors reported job gains while four sectors had losses.

The sector losing the most jobs was leisure and hospital, followed by professional and business services.
