Spring snowstorm, accidents close I-70 at Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado mountains

DENVER — A spate of accidents amid a spring snowstorm triggered the closure of Interstate 70 in the mountains west of Denver, but the highway has reopened.

I-70 was closed in both directions Thursday morning between Silverthorne and the Eisenhower tunnel, a distance of about 10 miles.

A Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman didn't know how many accidents had occurred.

The closed section was about 60 miles west of Denver. Traffic was rerouted along U.S. 6, which parallels the interstate and climbs over 11,990-foot Loveland Pass.
