LEXINGTON, Kentucky — Authorities say a man was fatally shot in the back after two men broke into his home in Lexington, Kentucky.

Investigators told WKYT-TV (http://bit.ly/1vHr2fJ) that 36-year-old Darnell Bates was in the front room of his home when the armed men broke in around 4:50 a.m. on Sunday.

Officers say Bates was shot in the back when he started fighting back.

According to WKYT, Bates' cousin and a friend, William Millen, were in the home during the invasion.

Millen called the shooting "a cowardly act."

"He leaves behind his mother, children, brothers, just a host of family and friends through the city of Lexington," said Millen, who worked with Bates at a local car wash. "It is a tragedy, a tragedy that should never happen."
