Tampa man pleads guilty in fatal crash, hopes to get reduced sentence

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Tampa man has pleaded guilty in a fatal crash.

Hoping to receive leniency, 41-year-old Theodore Papadopoulos entered his plea Monday. He had been charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving involving serious bodily injury.

Authorities say Papadopoulos was speeding in August 2009 when he lost control of his Corvette on a curving Pasco County road and hit an oncoming car. His passenger, 57-year-old Ernest John Baez, died in the collision, and two teens in the other vehicle were injured.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/KY6xEC ) reports that Papadopoulos is asking the judge to give him less than the minimum 10 1/2 years called for by state sentencing guidelines. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at his June 22 sentencing.
