SAN MATEO, California — Police say three special needs students and their student teacher were injured in a San Francisco Bay Area neighborhood when a car veered onto a sidewalk and struck them.

The crash in San Mateo occurred around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

San Mateo police Sgt. Rick Decker tells the San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/1smJkl1) the three high school students suffered minor injuries. The teacher, who is in her 20s, was more seriously injured, but is also expected to survive.

Decker says investigators are trying to determine what caused the driver to swerve.
