Ban on smoking in public spaces in Saltillo will take effect Sept. 18.

SALTILLO, Mississippi — A ban on smoking in public spaces in Saltillo will take effect Sept. 18.

The board of aldermen approved the ordinance Tuesday.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports ( ) the ordinance prohibits smoking, including electronic cigarettes, in all city buildings and vehicles, restaurants, banks, child care facilities, schools and any enclosed common public areas.

Alderman Brad Woodcock says the issue first came up in 2013 but had little support. He says Tuesday's vote was unanimous.

While most public places and businesses in Saltillo were already smoke-free, a handful of restaurants that still allow smoking will be affected.
