MORIAH, New York — State police say they've charged a northern New York man in the accidental wounding of an 83-year-old hunter last month.

Troopers say 33-year-old Shawn LaValley of Moriah and Joseph Rodriguez of Mineville were hunting deer separately on Dec. 1 in the Essex County town of Moriah when LaValley shot the other man in the abdomen with a .12-gauge shotgun slug.

Rodriguez was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center's hospital in Plattsburgh, where he was initially listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery. He has since been released and is recovering at home.

Troopers they've charged LaValley with assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. He was released from the county jail after posting $2,500 cash bail.

It couldn't be determined if LaValley has a lawyer.
