MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Federal officials say more than 142,500 Alabamians have signed up for health insurance through a federally facilitated marketplace.

Department of Health and Human Services officials said in a statement Wednesday that 142,525 Alabama residents have signed up for coverage. Officials say roughly 7.5 million people have chosen a plan or were automatically re-enrolled in one as of Jan. 30, 2015.

Department Secretary Sylvia Burwell says 89 percent of Alabama consumers who signed up for coverage qualify for federal assistance to lower their premiums.

Officials say the open enrollment deadline is Feb. 15.
