NEWPORT, Washington — Authorities say a hiker found human remains near U.S. Highway 2, west of Newport in northeast Washington.

KREM-TV reports (http://is.gd/sb9MLY ) that investigators think the remains found Tuesday have been there at least a year. Pend Oreille County sheriff's deputies say the area is known for transient camps.

Officials say the remains don't match any local missing person reports. They have been sent to the Spokane County medical examiner for DNA testing.

There are no obvious signs of foul play.
