Liquor sales will become legal in New Albany on June 6

NEW ALBANY, Mississippi — New Albany aldermen have passed the ordinance that will implement the sale of wine and liquor on June 6.

Mayor Tim Kent says the ordinance states that New Albany will follow the state's regulations.

City Attorney Regan Russell tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/13Krlra ) that the ordinance is to take effective date at least 30 days from its adoption, which would be June 6.

City residents voted in favor of legalization March 9. A public meeting was held May 7.

Liquor and wine can only be sold in the city or possibly at clubs or resort areas that meet state requirements.

The Alcoholic Beverage Commission legally can begin processing license applications for on-premises or retail package sales after June 6. The application process usually takes four to six weeks.
