1 killed in Charlotte wreck involving underage driver; police say alcohol, speed were factors

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say one person is dead following a wreck in which an underage driver was at the wheel.

Police say Tristan Robert Nichols was killed in the wreck that also injured two other people. They say speed and alcohol contributed to the wreck, which occurred early Sunday morning.

The wreck occurred when the car in a utility pole, shearing the vehicle in two.

Police say the 15-year-old driver faces several charges, including felony death by vehicle. He was taken to a juvenile detention facility.

The police report said the driver and the other two passengers suffered minor injuries.

Police didn't give an age or hometown for Nichols.
