COLUMBUS, Ohio — A company from Thailand is taking a key step as it considers constructing a multibillion-dollar petrochemical facility in eastern Ohio.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) on Thursday joined officials with PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited to announce the company's plans to invest $100 million in design work for the potential complex in Belmont County.
Kasich described the plant, called an ethane cracker, as being able to break ethane down into a substance used to make chemicals and plastic.
State leaders say the facility could lead to thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions.
A final decision on the feasibility of building the plant is expected in late 2016 or early 2017.
Kasich, a Republican presidential contender, stepped away the campaign trail to attend the announcement in Columbus.
This story has been corrected to show the date of the event is Thursday, not Wednesday.
