BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The fall inshore shrimp season in Louisiana will open at 6 a.m. August 17.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission announced the opening date Thursday.

A commission news release said the date was set based on data presented by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologists, and on public comments.

The announcement was accompanied by a reminder that, beginning Aug. 1, state wildlife agents will be authorized to conduct inspections aboard shrimp vessels to make sure they are using required turtle excluder devices that allow sea turtles to escape nets.
