GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Authorities in western Michigan have filed a murder charge against a state prisoner for the shooting death of a 30-year-old man at a birthday party in Grand Rapids 18 months ago.

Grand Rapids police announced Thursday that 19-year-old Jamal D. Bennett is charged with an open count of murder and possessing a firearm in a felony.

Police say gunfire erupted after uninvited guests arrived at a party March 16, 2013. Thirty-year-old Derecko Martin was killed and another man was wounded.

Bennett is serving a prison sentence for perjury in the same case. Police say they expect that the state Corrections Department will transfer him to Grand Rapids for arraignment on the new charges in the next few weeks.
