Palolo sewage spills prompts warnings to avoid Ala Wai Canal, nearby surf spots

HONOLULU — The state Department of Health is warning people to stay out of Palolo Stream, Ala Wai Canal, Magic Island and nearby Honolulu surf spots after a sewage spill.

The city's Department of Environmental Services said Tuesday a clogged sewer pipe sent untreated sewage out of a manhole and into Palolo Stream.

Tricycle parts, clothes, rocks and sticks clogged the pipe.

Officials were investigating how much sewage spilled into the stream.

The departments did not answer phone calls after business hours on Tuesday.
