61-year-old hiker dies after medical emergency on desert trail in Riverside County


PALM DESERT, California — Riverside County authorities say a 61-year-old man died after suffering a medical emergency during a hike on a sweltering desert trail.

Rescue crews were deployed around midday Saturday to the Bump and Grind trail in Palm Desert, where temperatures approached 100 degrees with no shade.

A CalFire rescue helicopter was also sent, but the man died shortly after the team arrived.

The Desert Sun newspaper ( says coroner's officials identified the victim as Palm Desert resident George Basanda.

The nature of the medical emergency isn't immediately known and the cause of death is under investigation.

The newspaper says a female hiker was hospitalized with minor injuries two days earlier after having a medical emergency on the same trail.
